A solar cell also named as photovoltaic cell is a device that converts light energy into electric current using the photovoltaic effect. The array of a photovoltaic cell produces direct current (DC) which fluctuates with the intensity of sunlight. For practical use, the direct current usually requires conversion to certain desired voltages or alternating current (AC), through the use of inverters. A number of solar cells are connected inside modules. Modules are connected together to form arrays, then tied to an inverter, which produces power at the required voltage, and for AC, the desired frequency/phase.
In Alagappa University, 12KW capacity of solar panels was installed in Science Campus and 5KW capacity of solar panels was also installed in University Guest House. Plans are afoot for erecting another 10 KW panels in the Administrative Building roof-top. Solar Power Plant on 4 acre stretch planned at an investment of Rs. 6.5 Crore with a payback period of 8 years, but post payback period life of another 12 years. The solar panels are connected to TANGEDCO grid so that the produced electricity is directly used in our University.
In addition to the above installations, solar street lights are also installed in various part of our University campus in order to reduce the conventional electricity usage. This project is also useful for students to have a hands-on learning experience in constructing small solar cells. The solar cells are installed and maintained by the Department of Energy Science, Alagappa University.
