As the years unfurled, the department's dedication to its cause remained unwavering, and in 2013, a significant milestone was achieved with the establishment of the Centre for Multimodal Material Production for Differently Abled and Para Sports Centre under Government of Tamilnadu Scheme. This pioneering initiative paved the way for the creation of Alagappa University Resource School for Differently Abled within the University Campus. This galaxy of the above units laid the groundwork for ensuring Inclusive and Special Education, with an innovative focus on Rehabilitation Education—an endeavor aptly acronymized as INSPIRE to serve children with disabilities. It forged alliance with the State Commissionerate of Differently Abled for extending state government recognition for Two Special Schools for Differently Abled (ID & Autism) with salary grant worth of Rs.12,96,000/- per year funded by State Government of Tamil Nadu, amplifying its impact and outreach.
The Centre for Multimodal Material Production Unit and Alagappa University Resource School for Differently Abled serve as a Feeder Unit to the Department.Alagappa University Special School in rendering an exclusive service with the Motto of Serve to Smile, Reach to Teach and Model to Mould. The Centre serves as a catalyst for transformative change by producing a wide array of digital accessible and multimedia materials tailored to accommodate various learning styles and abilities of students with disabilities. The Special Schools are currently serving more than eighty children with various disabilities with individualized Education Plan. The students’ talents are showcased in National level Sports and Cultural Competitions. Students bagged prizes at almost every competition and a student achieved a Chola Book of Record by practicing Silambam while walking. To the credit of Special School five students cleared their Board Exams.
Enabling Unit strives to promote equal opportunities, celebrate diversity, and cultivate a more inclusive campus for all.
Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and expertise, the unit designs and fabricates customized prosthetic devices for providing physiotherapy to the students with locomotor disabilities and tailored to the unique anatomical and functional requirements of each individual.
The Braille and Audio Book Production Unit produces high-quality Braille and DAISY audio learning materials and empower individuals with visual impairments to engage full participation in academic, literary, and recreational activities. This unit also provides opportunity for them to get used with high tech devices like Blaze, Refreshable Braille Display, Braille Embosser, Tactile Maker and Magnification devices.
The Vocational Store by Differently Abled stands as a testament to the art and craft creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit of individuals with disabilities of Special School.
The Alagappa University Special School for Differently Abled individuals, encompassing those with intellectual disabilities and autism, embodies a nurturing environment where each student is celebrated for their unique abilities and potential. Guided by principles of empathy, understanding, and specialized support, the school offers a holistic educational experience designed to meet the diverse needs of its students. With a focus on personalized instruction, therapeutic interventions, and inclusive practices, the school strives to empower students to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally, fostering a sense of belonging and self-fulfillment.
