Genesis
The Department of Computer Applications was established in the year 1986 and started offering a two-year M.Sc. (Computer Applications) Programme. Subsequently, a three- year M.C.A programme was offered from 1987 to 2019. For the benefit of working people, the Week-End M.C.A Programme was offered from 1994 to 2018. Later in the academic year 2020-21, a Two- year M.C.A Programme was introduced. M.Sc. Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Programme is offered from the academic year 2023 -2024. Ph.D. Programme is also offered. The curriculum includes proper blend of class room-based teaching, practical sessions in the computer lab, course work, record work, seminar and project work. The faculty members create an environment that is conducive for teaching-learning process. The department has well qualified and competent faculty members with rich experience in teaching and research. They have attended many National and International Conferences across the world. Students graduated from this Department are placed in reputed IT industries, Educational institutions and R&D Organizations across the world. The Department imparts world class training, research, and provides learners with state-of-the-art computing facilities. Major research areas are: Network Security, Database processing, Image Processing, Biometrics, Video Processing, Cloud Computing, Data Mining, Machine Learning etc.

Student Council
Department of Computer Application’s Student Council which is tasked with addressing issues and enhancing student welfare, serves as the official representative body for all computer applications students. It acts as a crucial conduit between students and the administration of the university, actively participating in initiatives to improve the general student experience. Student participation in departmental activities is encouraged, communication is facilitated, and issues are identified and resolved by the council. It serves as a channel for information sharing and responds to student issues while speaking up for the interests of the students in communication with the administration, teachers, and parents.
Additionally, by recognizing student contributions and offering suggestions for improving student life, the Student Council aids in the creation of educational projects. Each member, including the President and Vice Presidents, is responsible for particular tasks pertaining to leadership, organizing, gathering feedback, organizing events, involving alumni, supporting entrepreneurship, encouraging physical fitness. The committed work of the council aims to guarantee the overall growth and welfare of Alagappa University's Department of Computer Applications students.
